Shavuot marks the anniversary of the day when we received the Torah at Mount Sinai. It is the second of the three major festivals (Passover being the first, and Sukkot the third), occurring exactly fifty days after the second day of Passover.
The special Mitzvah of Shavuot is to listen to the Ten Commandments as a sign of reaffirmation of our fidelity to the Almighty.

On this occasion the EJCC members were invited to hear "The Ten Commandments" at the Ohel Eliezer, European Synagogue. Following the reading we heard the traditional Kiddush and enjoyed a delicious dairy buffet surrounded by hundreds of flowers kindly offered by one of our dear EJCC friends. It reminded us of the "Har Sinai" that was miraculously covered by flowers at the time of "The Giving of the Torah".

Here's a resume of the subject  developed by Rabbi Blumenthal: Western thought usually sets philosophy in opposition to mysticism, the former being rational and the latter being non-rational. But, in the Middle Ages, this was not the case. Rather, philosophy was the handmaiden of mysticism. This is especially true of the great Jewish philosopher, Moses Maimonides. By examining his science, philosophy, and definition of worship, we can see this clearly.
