FIRST 2023 WEBINAR – SEFARAD – Porto & Portugal’s Jewish Heritage
Porto, the picturesque city on the Douro River in Northern Portugal and the second-
largest city in the country, best known for port wine, famous bridges, and its stunning
Far less known is the remarkable saga of its Jewish community across the ages,
culminating in the 20th century with the critical figure of Captain Artur Carlos de Barros
Basto, who spearheaded the construction of the renowned Kadoorie Mekor Hayyim
Synagogue in 1938 and strove to integrate Portuguese crypto-Jews (Anusim) into the
Jewish community. Working alongside Captain Basto was Aristides de Sousa Mendes,
the Portuguese Consul in Bordeaux who issued 30,000 visas (10,000 to Jews), the
Porto Jewish community received Holocaust refugees during World War II, a legacy that
endures well into the 21st century.
